Great Smoky Mountains

Mountain Stream LullabyeMountain Stream Lullabye
This image is primarily “right from the camera”. I did add some contrast and a small amount of highlight recovery. This will mark a break in my Great Smoky Mountains collection. However, I will be adding to this collection on my webpage if you would like to visit. I plan to add a little more diversity on my blog pages and for sure, I will be featuring more of this gallery on my blog pages in the near future!
Since I purchased Nikkor’s 12-24 2.8 lens, I have been absolutely in love with it’s ability to capture such wide angles of view while maintaining is “corner to corner” tack sharpness. I am going to be heading out to try this lens in some of my Seascape images (keep your fingers crossed, the huge bubble on the end of this lens does not allow for any filter use).

Equipment used: Nikon D700, Nikkor 12-24mm 2.8 lens, Induro CT213 tripod, Induro BHD2 ballhead, and my trusty Stanley thermos.

As always, my images are copyright protected and available to you as wall art prints, wraps, and other merchadise. More info available on my “About” page. You can click on any of my images to see them in HIGH RES. Thanks for visiting! Great Smoky Mountains

Fall Colors BeginFall Colors Begin
One of my favorite things to do is to hike through the woods where the silence and solitude can be deafening. The sound of the wind blowing through the trees is a haunting reminder of small we are in totality of nature. The chill of the air stings our cheeks warning us that “old man winter” is on the way. The feeling of solitude fill our mind as we wonder about those that have walked the paths, stood by the streams, and lived through the harshness of nature’s frosty blanket. Behind me I can hear the roar of a waterfall. Setting up my camera and tripod for this shot, the animals surely thought I was crazy…moving from side to side, the forward and backward, until I finally found a spot I was happy with for the photograph. This shot was something I wanted to savor and enjoy…the rich warm colors of fall as they began to show themselves in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Equipment used: Nikon D700, Nikkor 12-24mm 2.8 lens, Induro CT213 tripod, Induro BHD2 ballhead, and my trusty Stanley thermos.

Enchanted PathEnchanted Path to the Woodshed
Chilly and misty morning in Gatlinburg, TN. This old wood shed was ighlighte by the rocks, colors, and even the mist and trees. Drawing my eye and my lens to spend some time trying to capture it. Well, and a thermos full of coffee to ward off the wet chill in the air.

A New Day DawningA New Day Dawning
While I was busy working on my passion of photography, and concentrating on on focus, framing, exposure, white balance….I noticed a movement off to my right, and the sounds of geese…LOTS of geese…as I looked up from my camera and to the right towards the rising sun..this is what I saw. A huge formation of geese heading in a direction that would cross between me and the rising sun. No time to calculate and fidget with setting! I ripped my camera from the tripod, at the same time I dialed in the notorious “P” (Programmed Auto Setting) on my Nikon D700, pointed, framed, and fired off three snaps of the shutter. This was the third shot, only minor sharpening and plus 3 on the saturation was all I did in Lightroom, and now I present it here for you. Proof positive that Matrix metering, programmed auto, and some incredible good luck can produce some gorgeous images! I know it is not the “perfect shot” and given time I am sure I could get that, but this was just a luck and sometime we all could use a little luck!
Location: Folly Beach, SC, USA
Equipment used: Nikon D700, Nikkor 24-70 2.8 lens, and one each..stroke of luck!

Dawn's Early LightDawn’s Early Light
Somtimes, you just have to be there. Steaming hot coffee in hand, peace, quiet, the sounds of the surf calming the freyed ends of your nerves. The colors of of the pre dawn light change, dance, and play in the reflections of the sea, in the tidal pools on the sand, and in the playground of your mind. Each one of us is different, and for each of us the sea has it’s own meaning, it’s own beauty, it’s own sanctuary for our souls. They say that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder; I feel it is also in the hearts and minds of the beholden. The display before me happened without calculation for weather, tempertures with humidity, tidal calcuations…it just happened. And I was fortunate enough, to just be there.

Sports

Gnarly wave!
I shot this surfer coming in from an awesome wave ride. There was a storm brewing off the coast of Charleston, SC, USA and was quickly approaching the East Coast. As a result, a large number of surfers showed up to grab some unusually large waves. I don;t know who this surfer is, but I do know he is a local to Folley Beach, SC. and was having a LARGE time out there! This image is not model released and I post it here as editorial only, it is copyrighted so please respect that. Do not reproduce without my written consent, but do please enjoy the viewing of this image. More surfers to come, and many more of my ‘Scapes and even a few models.

Yet another gorgeous sunrise, and here we are..me, the camera, the equipment, sun, sea, and surf, even the birds. But alas, the model has overslept and this gorgeous light…will be enjoyed by me and birds, and now you! I did not intent to be shooting seascapes and was prepared to start shoot the very second the model arrived…so the equipment section below will indicate I am NOT prepared to capture this gorgeous glimpse of the sun as it peeks over the horizon, but I do hope you like the image.

Location: Myrtle Beach, SC, USA

Purple Haze – as this weekend rushes up to meet us, I would like to wish everyone an awesome, safe, and happy weekend! Also, a special announcement: This weekend will be my LAST weeekend of Active Federal Service. I will be signing out of the military onto my retirement leave next week! yay! As you all know, this means I will be moving…eww…packing and wrapping and sorting and ..well, you know what all has to be done! As a result, my blog entries may slow down for a couple of days until I can get my office set back up at home.
For now, this image has been extremely successful on my purchasing website so I hope all of you enjoy the color filter and the article. It just goes to prove that I have been around a while, and that I do love me some Jimmy Hendrix classic rock! Though one of my favorite tunes is Voodoo Child, I have not yet obtained a shot that I feel would accurately reflect that one. So, I will leave you with a portion of the lyrics;
“I am standing next to a mountain. chop it down, with the edge of my hand. well I can pick up all the pieces, might even make an island, might even..Raise a lil sand!” Happy weekend everyone!

Location: Edisto Island, SC, USA
Equipment used: Nikon D700, Nikkor 24-70 2.8 lens, Iduro CT213 tripod, Indro BHD2 ballhead, and a purple sky filter.

Fall and Summer Collide- in pastelesFall and Winter Collide- in pasteles: Such a beautful expression of the rich, warm colors of fall with the icey quiet and white of winter.
This image was one of a series I photographed while on vacation in the beautiful town of Gatlinburg, TN USA. The hustle and bustle of the town is quickly left far behind as the Great Smokey Mountains National Park runs right along the city’s boarders and in some areas, actual strecth right into the town itself. Obviously a photographers paradise where skiing, hiking, rock climbing, kayaking, fly fishing, and tons of other outdoor activies all are easily found and photographic subjects readily available.

Equipment used: Nikon D700, Nikkor 24-70 lens, Induro CT213 tripod, Induro BHD2 ballhead, circular polarizer filter.

Solitude….serenity….peace..tranquility.
Just before sunrise, the sea has a way of bringing peace and tranquility, a sense of place and perspective. At times, she is quiet and peaceful, and always willing to listen. At other times, she can be forceful and raging leaving you humble; yet amazed. She vast and constantly changing. She is always beautful no matter her mood be it raging and wild or peaceful and relaxing.
She is nature, wild and free.
