Early fall and a “blue bird” kind of day. Gorgeous view from our cabin in Gatlinburg, TN, USA. Getting high above the crowd somehow frees the soul and sends out spirits soaring!
Image shot with a Nikon D700, 24-70 2.8, Induro CT213 tripod and an Induro BHD2 ballhead. Also used a circular polarizer filter.

A mountain stream near Gatlinburg, TN, USA.

Equipment used was a Nikon D700, a Nikkor 24-70 2.8 lens, circular polarizing filter, an Induro CT213 tripod and an Induro BHD2 ballhead. Using a high Aperture setting and a long Shutter speed of at least .30sec is absolutely essential to capturing the flowing water instead of “freezing” the action. The polarizer filter or an ND GRAD filter help to reduce the shutter speed.

As always, these images are available for your veiwing pleasure! The magical world of monochrome….devoid of color, brings out the truth in texture and emotion. As I awoke on a cold winter day, i found myself scrambling to gather my photography gear (and a cup of fresh HOT coffee!), then out on the upper deck of our cabin to capture this image of a new snowfall during this winter storm. The storm lasted all day, and provided some much needed bonding time with my lovely wife. The smell of fresh brewed coffee, the sound of the fire snapping and roaring in the fireplace, and plenty of time for simply talking and touching each other. Yes my friends, for me, this was a Perfect winter day! Walking out on the deck, it air was brittle cold, you could hear the muffled “whumps” of snow falling from the branches, and the sound of the snow packing down under your feet as you walk. Absolute silence filled the air, except for the sound of the wind as is blew through the trees. As evening fell and the sky darkened, I remember looking back into the house, the room painted with the glow of the fireplace and the candle lights. Truly one of our best evenings ever in Gatlinburg, TN.

Equipment used: Nikon D700, Nikkor 24-70 2.8 lens, Induro CT213 ballhead, and post processing with TOPAZ LABS Black and white Effects.

Fading light and long shutter speeds brings out the gorgeous richness of color while adding a soft surrel blur to the moving waves on Edisto Island, SC, USA. The Boneyard is famous for these trees living on the beach and having the sea come crashing in on them at high tide.

Another long exposure shot of “the Boneyard” at Edisto Island, SC, USA. The sun was about to set (90 degrees camera right), the colors and emotion here were breathtaking! My senses were overhwelmed as this was the first time I had ever been to this location and was so busy trying to take in the gorgeous scenery, enjoy and savor the moments, and still concentrate on framing, focal length, iso values, aperture, and shotter speeds, along with timing the shutter to open with the long retracting waves of the ocean. For those who have never tried this…it is a daunting task! but one that is truly good for the soul.

Moving a little farther south, but still in South Carolina; I spent an evening on Edisto Island in a place called “the Boneyard”. Trying my hand at some of my photography skills, I used some high aperture settings along with some slow shutter speeds to capture some of the more surreal scenes of this magical beach. At high tide, the ocean rushes inland to submerge the trees that have clung to life on the beach. The trees pictured here are quite large, a grown person would actually have to reach up to touch the lowest limb on these trees feature near the center of this shot. you can see many more of my images of this gorgeous place by clicking here: http://www.stanshillingburg.com/photography and click on the Landscapes and Seascapes gallery. Hope you enjoying veiwing as much as I enjoyed photographing this wonderful gem in South Carolina! And again, by purchasing a print you help he fund my travels to photograph the most gorgeous subjects on earth, thank you!
